Tenun cloth is a traditional craft product that we can find in almost all regions in Indonesia and has its own characteristics, one of which is Banten. Baduy Tenun is a traditional tenun cloth native to the Kanekes (Baduy) people in Lebak Regency, Banten Province.

Baduy is one of Indonesia’s cultural assets located in the administrative area of Lebak Regency, Banten Province, which has also known and used cloth for a long time.

This traditional cloth is not only beautiful, but also full of philosophical meaning that reflects the traditions and beliefs of the Kanekes (Baduy) people.

Cloth is one of the primary human needs that has existed for a long time and is made through processes that are increasingly more complex in terms of materials, equipment, manufacturing techniques and motifs.

The technology and materials used in making tenun cloth in the Baduy community can be said to be still simple. The tenun fabric produced by the Baduy community is made using the technology of the Gedogan Warp tenun Machine, namely the part that is already in the form of cloth is rolled with a wedge rod, while the part of the warp thread that has not been tenun is wound on a totogan. On this loom, there is usually a comb to control the arrangement of the warp threads and tighten the tenun.
The process of making tenun fabric begins with making thread. Nowadays, practicality is the main thing in fabric manufacturing. The need to fulfill orders for Baduy tenun cloth meant that efforts to make yarn were diverted to a ready-made yarn ordering system. Usually the yarn products that Baduy people often order come from the Majalaya area, Bandung Regency, West Java. Even though many people use ready-to-tenun thread, the traditional process that has been carried out from generation to generation still exists and is carried out today.

The materials for making thread consist of two types, namely pelah leaves and cotton. These two ingredients do not go hand in hand. The first material used to make thread is made from pelah leaves, which is a type of plant that usually grows in forests with leaves shaped like snake fruit leaves. To turn pelah leaves into material for making thread, it is used through a boiling process. The first stage is to select young pelah leaves according to the quantity needed. All the pelah leaves are then boiled until it is easy to extract the fiber.
